According to new reports, the Windows RT Surface 2 tablets are out of
stock on the official Microsoft online store, possibly discontinued.
On Thursday evening, all variants of the RT-powered Surface 2
tablet, which was unveiled in 2013, were listed as out of stock on the
company's online store. The Surface 2 is one of the last tablets from
Microsoft to run Windows RT, the company's tablet OS designed for
low-power ARM chips. When asked if the company plans to restock the
RT-powered tablet, a Microsoft
spokesperson said, "Surface 2 is available at Best Buy. Microsoft
doesn't have anything to share beyond that." In the US, the Surface 2
tablet is simply listed as out of stock, not offering any solutions to
find the tablet. Microsoft urges users to check out the Surface Pro 3
instead, offering a link to the Windows 8.1 Pro tablet. In the UK, users
are offered a button to help "Find a Retailer" for the Surface 2 as
well as the link to the Surface Pro 3 but are also unable to purchase
the RT tablet from the Microsoft store.
Many believe that the lack of stock of the Surface 2 may signal the
end of Windows RT as Windows 10 looks to make a single mobile OS for
phones and tablets. Windows RT users will not be able to upgrade their
devices to Windows 10,
according to Microsoft, though the company said that it is "working on
an update for Surface [Windows RT], which will have some of the
functionality of Windows 10" much like Windows Phone 7 and 7.5 users
when Windows Phone 8 was unveiled. While Windows RT users will not be
getting the Windows 10 upgrade, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1-based devices
will get the update free within the first year of Windows 10's
availability.
