Homeworld, one of the more beloved space-strategy franchises of
the late 1990s/early 2000s, is flying back into relevancy. Just
announced today at the PAX South convention, a brand-new HD remake of
both Homeworld and Homeworld 2 will arrive this year—February 25, to be
specific, which is more than a decade since either game was first
released.
In a nutshell, Homeworld tasked you with managing a space fleet in
all sorts of "you're gonna die" encounters—warping in and out of various
locations as your flagship, a giant mothership, attempted to find a
habitable world for your civilization to call a new home. Deep stuff,
and an especially engrossing storyline that perfectly established the
game's key condition: Lose the mothership and it's game over, period.
Gearbox Software's updated iteration of Homeworld and Homeworld 2
won't just be a graphical reworking. First off, both the newer variants
of Homeworld and Homeworld 2 can be found in the new Homeworld
Remastered Collection in addition to the original, untouched versions of
both games—if you're a Homeworld purist at heart.
"Crafted with the assistance and guidance of the original creators as
well as the help of a passionate fan community, Homeworld Remastered
Collection introduces Relic's acclaimed space strategy games Homeworld
and Homeworld 2 to modern players and operating systems using modern
advances in graphics rendering technology," reads the newly launched Homeworld Remastered website.
"Homeworld Remastered Collection includes updated high-res textures
and models, new graphical effects, and support for HD, UHD, and 4K
resolutions. Homeworld's original audio and video artists have also
recreated cinematic scenes in beautiful high fidelity."
Additionally, Gearbox will be launching a unified multiplayer system
that will combines every aspect of Homeworld and Homeworld 2 into a
single online mode. Though the multiplayer functionality will launch
with the release of the Homeworld Remastered Collection on February 25,
it'll still be in beta—Gearbox plans to tweak the setup with the help of the game's players just to ensure that everything is fair and balanced for all.
The Homeworld Remastered Collection will cost $35 when it's released.
If you're a Steam fan, you can pre-order the game right now for a 15
percent discount, bringing the price to just shy of $30.
Wow, cool post. I'd like to write like this too - taking time and real hard work to make a great article... but I put things off too much and never seem to get started. Thanks though.
